Benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

What is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP is a byproduct of your own blood. Your blood is collected as it would be when you go in for a blood draw following your doctor’s visit. The plasma is then separated from your blood via a centrifuge which spins at a high speed. The plasma that is left over consists of platelets. These platelets contain growth factors which trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration and healing. It was traditionally used in sports medicine and injected into the joints to help with tissue repair. Now it has gained quite a following and popularity in aesthetic medicine as it has been shown to help with hair growth and skin rejuvenation.

Combine PRP with other aesthetic treatments

There are many ways! We can apply it topically to the skin and scalp or inject it into the skin directly. Read below for more information.

PRP for hair growth

One way is by injecting it into the scalp to stimulate hair growth. Our approach at The Skin Clinic is two-fold. First, we treat the scalp with radio frequency (RF) microneedling. This treatment also stimulates the healing cascade by introducing heat and creating microchannels in the skin. This signals platelets and its growth factors to the scalp to stimulate hair growth. Second, we topically apply the PRP to the scalp and then RF microneedle the scalp again. This approach is two treatments in one and is generally more tolerated than injection alone. It must be noted that for areas of large hair loss, the hair follicle is lost and cannot regrow again. Generally, 3 treatments are required and like all aesthetic treatments maintenance is important, usually twice yearly.

PRP for skin rejuvenation

Another way we can use PRP is by applying it topically to the skin following a CO2 laser resurfacing treatment, IPL photo facial, microneedling or RF microneedling. Precious collagen and elastin diminish as we age, more specifically, 1% of collagen is lost each year after our 20’s! This contributes to sagging skin, poor skin texture and wrinkles. PRP promotes healing and triggers cell production of collagen and elastin which leads to tissue regeneration. This improves the appearance of fine lines, loose skin, scars and skin texture. Following your treatment, it can be washed off after about 4 hours.

PRP with filler

PRP can also be delivered by injection. We mix PRP with filler, such as Restylane, and then inject these two together wherever the patient wishes to add volume. This is a great treatment because we not only add volume to the face with the hyaluronic filler but also stimulate your own cells to produce new collagen and elastin. This creates smoother, brighter, firmer looking skin.

PRP is a versatile and effective treatment that uses your own blood to stimulate cellular regeneration and tissue growth.
